Study to Teach

In this 6 week workshop, my goal is to introduce you to A method for studying the Bible in order to be able to teach the Bible. The method is from The Charles Simeon Trust. It’s exegetical. It’s clear. It’s simple. But it’s not easy. Studying the Bible and teaching the Bible are both challenging. But we believe God’s Word is what God uses to change lives. So we believe it’s worth the work.
This Simeon Trust method is primarily aimed at preparing exegetical sermons or Bible talks. Outside of the Sunday morning sermon, many of our teaching settings at Infinity are more conversational and interactive. However, I believe this method of being able to discern the meaning of the text, and crafting a clear argument for the audience, will still be highly beneficial, no matter the teaching setting.
So here’s the outline of this 6 session workshop:
6 Sundays - 4:00-5:30pm
March 15, 29
April 12
May 3, 17, 31
Week 1 will be all together in one group for the full time.
It will be a "working lecture" with primarily teaching, but periodic times of working with a neighbor in the Bible to see the ideas presented.
Weeks 2-6 will be split between "working lectures" and Small Group work.
For each of these weeks, you will be assigned a passage of Scripture and bring a two page "sermon prep worksheet" that you completed before the workshop session. You will give a 5 minute presentation of your work to a small group. Everyone is learning. Everyone has room to grow. We’re doing this together to help one another. So please don’t be intimidated! But also know, the expectation is that you’re coming prepared with your work done ahead of time, and that we’re all submitting our work for feedback from one another.
Simeon Trust has a worksheet template, and a worksheet guide.
We will go over these in the first session, but it might help you to familiarize yourself with both before you come.
